Long before YouTube dance crazes, auto-tuned rappers and Twitter beef there was the ’90s, a time when emcees cared about their craft and hip-hop was at its dopest. It’s no surprise then that up-and-coming MA beathsmith Confidence chose to reach back to rap’s golden era for his debut mixtape, “ReCon”, an hour long project that resurrects 16 mid-’90s classics for your listening pleasure. And as if that wasn’t enough, DJ Grazzhoppa, the 1991 European DMC champ, cuts & mixes the tracks together, showcasing turntablism at its finest hour (celebrity DJs & Serato newbies need not apply).
“ReCon’ features some of the ’9′s most time-honored cuts, ranging from O.C.’s “Time’s Up”, Black Moon’s “How Many Emcees” and CNN’s “T.O.N.Y.” to some underground treasures circa Stretch & Bobbito, including Big L’s “American Dream” & Big Noyd’s “Recognize & Realize”. The only thing “ReCon’ is missing is a tape deck…don’t sleep!
Filler-Free mixtape start to finish, hosted by DJ Doo Wop to commemorate the Concepts / New Balance collab from last year. To mark Concepts founding year, all the selections chosen are from ’96 and include Ghost, Pete Rock, Redman, Tupac, Outkast, Jay-Z, Royal Flush, Fugees, Mobb Deep & more. List & Link Follow: (more…)
Album # 3 didn’t match up but Poetic & Frukwan still brought some disgustingly good music like the “Killing Fieldz” single. Not sure why there are misspellings all over the place but this 12″ has street versions for both plus the usual acapellas and instrumentals. DOWNLOAD
This is one of those really rare finds that Wu fans can thank the internet for. Right here’s a Side A / Side B rip of the Mystagogue Vol. 2 cassette that came inside sealed issues of Slap skateboard magazine back in 1996. The cassette / Slap promo was only available at skate shops and was meant to act as a hype tool for the Wu skate team. The file hit about every blog a few years back but a big number of the links have gone dead. Here it is for everybody a 3rd time around. It’s those raw RZA beats you know & love mixed with some jazzy instrumentals and lots of great scratching. The intro is classic too.
One of the best downloads to hit this site. Here’s a 1996 mix from Kool Kirk featuring a Meth side (vs) a Chef side which consist of remixes, classics and Wu blends exclusive to this tape. “Riddler” b/w “Big Poppa” is reason enough right there!
